Gillian Phillips

I am the Director of Editorial Legal Services for Guardian News & Media Limited (publishers of the Guardian & Observer newspapers and theguardian.com). I went to school in Newbury in Berkshire. At University, I read history and then law. I trained as a solicitor in private practice in the City of London before joining the BBC as an in-house lawyer in 1987. I have also worked in-house at The Sun & The News of the World and The Times and The Sunday Times. I advise Guardian News and Media on all pre-and post-publication editorial legal matters such as defamation, copyright, contempt and privacy. I advised Guardian News and Media on phone-hacking, Wikileaks, the Leveson Inquiry and the Edward Snowden leaks. I also sit as a part-time Employment Tribunal judge.
