Sandy Canavan
Circuit Judge, Snaresbrook Crown Court
I am a Circuit Judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court, in East London presiding over criminal cases.
I grew up on a council estate in Hackney, East London with my parents, who are Irish, and my three sisters. My father worked as a boiler man at Fords in Enfield and my mother as a credit controller at Commercial Union.
I was educated at a state school, Our Lady’s Convent in Stamford Hill, and thereafter studied Law at King’s College London. I was luck enough to have the costs of my Bar Finals paid by the state.
I was a barrister, practising in crime, family and some civil law. I was made a Recorder [a part-time criminal judge] in 2010 and a full-time Circuit Judge in 2014
